Why Santa Bárbara Castle Cannot Be Understood Without the Huerta Watchtowers
The mighty Santa Bárbara Castle dominates Mount Benacantil (166 meters elevation). During the Renaissance it served as the military headquarters, armory, and command center for the Kingdom against Ottoman and Barbary corsairs.
However, the castle could not feed the city alone nor protect dispersed farmers. Alicante's granary was the fertile Huerta (wheat, vegetables, and legendary Fondillón wine grapes), the primary target for corsairs raiding crops and taking captives.
Upon spotting enemy sails, coastal watchmen ignited dense smoke by day or beacon bonfires by night. Within 15 minutes, visual signals jumped from tower to tower across the plain directly to the ramparts of Santa Bárbara Castle.
